Sleepless Nights

on March 12, 2013

I’ve read that it is common for hysterectomy patients to suffer from insomnia following their surgery due to an imbalance in hormones. I am almost 3 weeks post-op and haven’t slept through the night since I stopped taking pain medication. Without fail I wake between 2-4 and I am up for almost 2 hours. At first I tried just laying there and hoping to fall asleep, and now I’m reading but not getting a good nights sleep is quickly wearing me down. I have also read that your body should work it self out 4 or 5 weeks after surgery. I can only hope that this is the case! I would love to hear some ideas on how to sleep through the night, or how to get back to sleep once I wake up.

I am nervous about my appointment with the oncologist tomorrow. I don’t know why, maybe because seeing the doctor makes the whole thing real. You would think that surgery would have made it feel real, but women have hysterectomy’s for a lot of reasons…one big reason being endometriosis. I’ve known for a few months that I would be doing chemo, but now that I’m getting close to starting I’m thinking about what the chemo is going to do to me. I’m not looking forward to being sick, feeling like I have the flu, the fatigue or the brain fog that is going to come with the chemo.

Maybe some relaxing music would help me. I love Only Time by Enya…enjoy!

Thinking of you Renee, your positive attitude will carry you through this, you are tough! Having seen someone go through this recently and have a remarkable attitude like yours gave her incredible strength, it was like she wasn’t sick at all! Her strength and determination was admirable and i know that was a huge help with her recovery, so keep the positive thoughts with you at all times, I have no doubt you will have that same outcome! You are a very strong woman! Thinking of you and Owen.

Don’t fall prey to the nerves…you’re one step closer to completing your treatment. Try and look at it that way. Easier said than done most days, I know, but you’re doing fantastic and you’re an inspiration to many of us. We love you, Nay. Every little thing’s gonna be all right xo

When you are through this battle you may like to plan a Cruise…very relaxing and healing with the ebb and flow of the tides….I think you would like it

My interrupted sleep is definitely related to night sweats. Don’t forget you are only 3 weeks out of surgery. It takes time for our bodies to repair.

    • There are certainly a lot of things to adjust too! It’s hard to believe it’s only been 3 weeks, it kind of feels like forever!! I know it will pass, I really look forward to feeling somewhat normal again. Or at least to the day when it’s not a big effort to get out of bed!

  6. Hi Renee,
My husband has just had an operation 3 weeks ago and he too can’t sleep. The other night he didn’t bother going to bed at all because he was just getting angry that he was lying awake. After a full 24 hours of being awake he went to bed and slept like a baby. Thank goodness. I’m not suggesting you do an all nighter because it’s daft, but I think it is normal to have insomnia after surgery. Maybe get a relaxation app, I’ve got a few and I love them! They really do work, because they focus your mind on relaxing your body and before you know it you’re asleep without even hearing the end of it.
I hope your appoinment went as well as can be expected. Just try not to think too far ahead, one step at a time is best. Keep writing down your thoughts and talking to your loved ones, a problem shared and all that. Xxx

    • I hope your husband is feeling better! I will look up some relaxation apps, that’s a great idea. My appointment went great, the cancer didn’t spread past my one ovary! Now I’m waiting on a treatment plan, but it wouldn’t feel right if they didn’t leave me waiting on something! Ha. I hope your doing well!

  7. That’s great news! I will do a little dance for you right now! I get my ct scan results tomorrow, I hope my news is as positive as yours!
